Understanding Incoterms\u00ae is a vital part of International Trade because they clearly state which tasks, costs and risks are associated with the buyer and the seller.\u00a0 The Incoterm\u00ae states when the seller\u2019s costs and risks are transferred onto the buyer.\u00a0 It is also important to understand that not all rules apply in all cases.\u00a0 Some encompass any mode or modes of transport (this category includes FCA, CPT, CIP, DAT, DAP and DDP).\u00a0 Whereas others only apply for sea and inland waterway transport (FAS, FOB, CFR and CIF), which we explain below.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 2rem;\">Why are Incoterms\u00ae vital in International Trade?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Incoterms\u00ae are referred to as <strong>In<\/strong>ternational <strong>Co<\/strong>mmercial <strong>Terms<\/strong>.\u00a0 They are a set of rules published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/iccwbo.org\/resources-for-business\/incoterms-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Chamber of Commerce (ICC)<\/a>, which relate to International Commercial Law.\u00a0 According to the ICC, <a href=\"https:\/\/iccwbo.org\/resources-for-business\/incoterms-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Incoterms\u00ae rules<\/a> provide internationally accepted definitions and rules of interpretation for most common commercial terms used in contracts for the sale of goods\u2019.\u00a0 All International purchases will be processed on an agreed Incoterm\u00ae to define which party legally incurs costs and risks.\u00a0 Incoterms\u00ae will be clearly stated on <a href=\"https:\/\/incodocs.com\/blog\/shipping-document-process-overview-export-import\/\">relevant shipping documents.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<br \/><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NEY60B8Ocg4?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\u00a0\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The 3 most common Incoterms\u00ae you should understand.<\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><abbr title=\"Ex-Works \u00a0or Ex-Warehouse\">EXW<\/abbr> &#8211; Ex-Works \u00a0or Ex-Warehouse<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ex works is when the seller places the goods at the disposal of the buyer at the seller\u2019s premises or at another named place (i.e., works, factory, warehouse, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>The seller does not need to load the goods on any collecting vehicle. Nor does it need to clear them for export, where such clearance is applicable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><abbr title=\"Free On Board\">FOB<\/abbr> &#8211; Free On Board<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The seller delivers the goods on board the vessel nominated by the buyer at the named port of shipment or procures the goods already so delivered.<\/li>\n<li>The risk of loss of or damage to the goods passes when the products are on board the vessel.\u00a0 The buyer bears all costs from that moment onwards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><abbr title=\"Cost and Freight\">CFR<\/abbr> &#8211; Cost and Freight<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The seller delivers the goods on board the vessel or procures the goods already so delivered.<\/li>\n<li>The risk of loss of or damage to the goods passes when the products are on board the vessel.<\/li>\n<li>The seller must contract for and pay the costs and freight necessary to bring the goods to the named port of destination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><b>Please note the ICC have published updates to Incoterms\u00ae:<br \/><\/b><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/incodocs.com\/blog\/incoterms-2020-explained-the-complete-guide\/\">Click here to read the current article on current Incoterms\u00ae 2020<\/a><\/h3>\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<h2><b>Other Incoterms\u00ae Explained<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FCA &#8211; Free Carrier<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The seller delivers the goods to the carrier or another person nominated by the buyer at the seller\u2019s premises or another named place.<\/li>\n<li>The parties are well advised to specify as explicitly as possible the point within the named place of delivery, as the risk passes to the buyer at that point.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CPT \u00a0&#8211; Carriage Paid To<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The seller delivers the goods to the carrier or another person nominated by the seller at an agreed place (if any such site is agreed between parties).<\/li>\n<li>The seller must contract for and pay the costs of carriage necessary to bring the goods to the named place of destination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CIP &#8211; Carriage And Insurance Paid To<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The seller has the same responsibilities as CPT, but they also contract for insurance cover against the buyer\u2019s risk of loss of or damage to the goods during the carriage.<\/li>\n<li>The buyer should note that under CIP the seller is required to obtain insurance only on minimum cover. Should the buyer wish to have more insurance protection, it will need either to agree as much expressly with the seller or to make its own extra insurance arrangements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DAT &#8211; Delivered At Terminal<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The seller delivers when the goods, once unloaded from the arriving means of transport, are placed at the disposal of the buyer at a named terminal at the designated port or place of destination. \u201cTerminal\u201d includes a place, whether covered or not, such as a quay, warehouse, container yard or road, rail or air cargo terminal.<\/li>\n<li>The seller bears all risks involved in bringing the goods to and unloading them at the terminal at the named port or place of destination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DAP &#8211; Delivered At Place<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The seller delivers when the goods are placed at the disposal of the buyer on the arriving means of transport ready for unloading at the named place of destination.<\/li>\n<li>The seller bears all risks involved in bringing the goods to the named place.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DDP &#8211; Delivered Duty Paid<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The seller delivers the goods when the goods are placed at the disposal of the buyer, cleared for import on the arriving means of transport ready for unloading at the named place of destination.<\/li>\n<li>The seller bears all the costs and risks involved in bringing the goods to the place of destination.\u00a0 They must clear the products not only for export but also for import, to pay any duty for both export and import and to carry out all customs formalities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Other Rules for Sea and Inland waterway transport.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FAS &#8211; Free Alongside Ship<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The seller delivers when the goods are placed alongside the vessel (e.g., on a quay or a barge) nominated by the buyer at the named port of shipment.<\/li>\n<li>The risk of loss of or damage to the goods passes when the products are alongside the ship.\u00a0 The buyer bears all costs from that moment onwards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CIF &#8211; Cost, Insurance and Freight<\/h3>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The seller delivers the goods on board the vessel or procures the goods already so delivered.
